Danganronpa 2×2 is a remake of the original Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, but it also includes a new “what if” scenario called “Slayhem,” in which different murder mysteries will unfold. This means that while Danganronpa 2 ended with five survivors out of its 16 Hope’s Peak Academy students at the end of Monokuma’s killing game, the group that walks away with only emotional damage in this scenario may look entirely different. Since 2×2’s announcement last year, fans have been speculating about which characters may kill, be killed, and survive in the second go at the game’s “Killing School Trip.” With the game now being delayed into 2027, I figure I have some time to put my own predictions out there before Spike Chunsoft sends these Ultimate students on another island vacation to die for.
The Danganronpa games have a simple but chilling premise: 16 high school students are trapped somewhere by an animatronic teddy bear called Monokuma, who tells them that if they want to leave their confinement, they must get away with murder. Thus, the player ends up solving multiple murders as the group picks each other off. Once their crime has been revealed, Monokuma executes them in an elaborate, ironic death machine that is usually a nod to the Ultimate talent that landed them in Hope’s Peak Academy in the first place. So with 2×2, we’ll see new murders and executions, and a new overall story.
The Danganronpa 2 cast has had a complete story across their game and the Danganronpa 3 anime, so I’m expecting 2×2 to draw from both as it subverts and inverts the original game’s outcomes to remix them into something fresh. We’ll be talking full spoilers for the whole series going forward, so avert your eyes if you’ve yet to play through the game and watch the anime.
