Danes Won't Get EA Sports MMA Thanks To Energy Drink Ban

Denmark bans energy drinks, I guess because they provide gratuitous amounts of energy or something. What's that got to do with video games? Well, EA Sports MMA is shot through with energy drink ads.

So Denmark was like "slooooooowwwww dowwwwwnnnnn," and EA was like "Fuck you!" and kicked her in the face with its energy legs. (Metaphorically speaking, of course.) Rather than swap out the ads it's just not going to release the game in Denmark.

"We are adhering to laws in Denmark that restrict the use of energy drink product placement in-game, and therefore are not shipping EA Sports MMA in that region," EA told CVG. "Our game authentically recreates the sport of MMA in every facet, including energy drink in-game sponsorships on fighter shorts, gear, and in fight venues."

Basically, EA's already getting paid for that ad space. Pretty sure it would cost them well more than they'd make back in sales if they solicited a bunch of Denmark-safe ads and published a game specifically for that country, population 5.5 million. And I'm also sure Danish MMA fans can find a way to get their hands on a copy when it releases in Europe on Oct. 22.

Seriously, though, what's Denmark's deal with energy drinks?
