And wouldn't you know it, Wesker came tumbling after. That's so Albert. Two Resident Evil heroes and one villain take mobile zombie fighting online in Resident Evil Mercenaries VS for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Resident Evil's Mercenaries mini-game first appeared in Resident Evil 4 as a special offline game mode. Resident Evil 5 brought it online, giving fans of Capcom's zombie series a new way to play with and against their friends. Now the Mercenaries mode is developing a life of its own. There's Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D on the way for Nintendo's 3DS, and now we've got Resident Evil Mercenaries VS for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

While the 3DS version of Mercenaries seeks to combine the modes from Resident Evil 4 and 5 into a massive new game, Resident Evil Mercenaries VS is the essence of Mercenaries boiled down into a quick and dirty game for up to four players.

This is Capcom Mobile's first online game for the iPhone, and the development team has done a fine job of making things work smoothly. Four players can fight in free-for-all or two-on-two battles across three different maps, battling to survive attacks by both other players and the hordes of shambling mutants roaming the streets.

It does strike me as a little odd that a four-player online game would online have three available character models. Perhaps an update will come along and make everything better. Or maybe Capcom will sell them to us in the game's built-in store.

Released on April 14, Resident Evil Mercenaries VS is now available on the iTunes App Store for the low introductory price of $2.99. If you're planning on grabbing it, now would be the time, while there are still people playing it.
