Borderlands 4, As Told By Steam Reviews

For those who can get it to run, it sounds like a pretty good time

Borderlands 4 arrived last month on September 12–and some people are still waiting for shader compilation! That’s a preview of what you can expect in this edition of “As Told By Steam Reviews,” because, ya’ll, either this game really, truly runs that poorly or the mimetic nature of the internet is working overdrive here.

You’ll quickly spot a trend when it comes to perusing BL4’s user reviews on Steam: Folks are generally struggling to enjoy this game  not because of the story or the gunplay– the reviews mostly speak favorably of those elements. No, that pale orange “Mixed” review status on the game’s Steam page is the result of countless reviews trashing how this game runs, with particular ire directed toward Unreal Engine 5, and for Gearbox’s talkative CEO who also spent some time doubling as tech support after this game’s bumpy release.

It’s hard to find a negative review that doesn’t just meditate on the misery of eternal shader compilation and signature UE5 stuttering. But those who ain’t too hot on what BL4 is selling seem to find the open world a little shallow. On top of that, there are some who seem to just prefer BL2’s writing over the narrative and dialogue here.

Positive reviews, however, reflect that Borderlands’ gun-handling has come a long way since the awkwardness it exhibited of the earlier entries. It feels like a more refined shooter experience than ever, and, to some at least, it seems the writing is much better.

So let’s get onto Borderlands 4, as told by Steam reviews!

‘Who are you and what have you done to the borderlands writing team?!’

A Steam review reads: "A Better Story? An interesting antagonist? Jokes that actually make me laugh? Who are you and what have you done to the borderlands writing team?! Gameplay is solid and feels WAY better than 3"

‘You straight up can’t play this game if you’re broke.’

A Steam user review reads:" You straight up can't play this game if you're broke, ♥♥♥♥ needs a quantum computer to run smoove at high settings. Good thing I'm 6'3", fine as hell, and stack paper like crazy. Ladies, hit my line. "

‘The structure of the balance, postgame and gear has actual thought behind it for once.’

A Steam user review reads:" Genuinely the most comprehensive Borderlands game to date. Opening mission makes a stance about changing its tone after BL3. Taking it more serious. I don't like when linear games go open world but BL4 has done it well. There's always something happening, everywhere. And in terms of stuff to do it's nigh endless. The fullness of the map will give you more hours than any base game version of any other Borderlands game, and as with every single other BL game, endgame will come later. And the structure of the balance, postgame and gear has actual thought behind it for once. Genuinely amazing game through and through. I have a full AMD top end rig from 2 years ago and it's running great, 100fps ultra settings no frame gen, 1440p. They've done 2 performance patches already which both have helped. I know people running (potato) on a 1080ti at 60. It's not great, and is the main downside of the game. Except for the UI. The UI sucks again. "

‘Borderlands 4 feels like that first sip of an energy drink at 2 AM when you know you’re gaming all night.’

A Steam user review reads: " Borderlands 3 felt like a bad hangover. Borderlands 4 feels like that first sip of an energy drink at 2 AM when you know you’re gaming all night. Guns are wild, movement is slick, and the Vault Hunters are actually fun and unique. I was ready to give up on the series after 3, but 4 completely changed my mind. It’s the most I’ve enjoyed Borderlands since 2. "

‘Most importantly the writing has taken a step in the right direction.’

A Steam user review reads:" I have not been plagued so far by performance issues and have enjoyed a lot of the changes they've made. Most importantly the writing has taken a step in the right direction. World events feel fun and interesting and the world is beautiful. Though things do feel strangely not borderlands here somehow. I'll update this when I play some more but if you're looking for more borderlands this is it and they've adapted well. "

‘Randy needs to get off twitter. Performance is garbage.’

A Steam user review reads:"The best borderlands has been in a long time. Gunplay is a step up from BL3. Ridiculous amount of content on release. Most of the cringe writing is gone. Story actually somewhat serviceable. Randy needs to get off twitter. Performance is garbage. Wait for patches and some of the meatier DLCs unless you're a BADASS..."

‘Do they give Chimpanzee’s keyboards and say bash these buttons.’

A Steam user review reads:" I have not had any issues with this game until this recent patch 09/25/25. Now my game runs like complete garbage and not playable at all! How are they managing to make things worse! Do they give Chimpanzee's keyboards and say bash these buttons. "

‘If you reallllllllly want this game, wait for a sale. CEO has made it clear you arent wanted anyways.’

A Steam user review reads:"Honestly? Meh. Besides the constant crashing, audio issues, stuttering and input problems the game is boring. Its clear we wont be getting anything close to borderlands 2 story wise, and thats okay but honestly it feels this humour was written by people who havent touched comedy in their lives. Making all the characters overly bombastic doesnt mean theyre funny or interesting. The weapon varity is good, but thats to be expected in a borderlands game. Character abilities are a mish mash of some previous abilities and some new ones. It shows they had no idea how to make new and interesting abilities so they recycled a tonne of old ones and gave one to each character. Vex (The siren) Whom I used was basically gaige from BL2, you get a melee "Reaper" with a scythe, however you also get a spectre who stands in spot and fires a gun too. Each character gets three abilities which IS a good change however when most of them are previous abilities it shows theyre creatively bankrupt as a company. Obviously I can only gleam off what little I was able to play of the game but my honest early review is: Meh, it doesnt jump out at you, it doesnt do anything unique, It plays like a Farcry game just with different rarity weapons, and thats not a good thing. World feels empty and bland, doesnt even really look all that appealing either. I was always a sucker for rose tinted glasses with these games as I was someone whom played the first and second games for hundreds to thousands of hours on console but this still isint it. If you realllllllly want this game, wait for a sale. CEO has made it clear you arent wanted anyways. "

A Steam user review reads:"Compiling Shaders. Compiling Shaders. Compiling Shaders. Compiling Shaders. Compiling Shaders. Compiling Shaders. Compiling Shaders. Compiling Shaders. Play Compiling Shaders. Compiling Shaders. Compiling Shaders. Compiling Shaders. "

‘This game felt more like a poor imitation of Destiny 2 than a borderlands game.’

A Steam user review reads:"Somehow feels like a step back from borderlands 3 in almost every way. The tonal shift in the writing is good and was appreciated. The optimization is bad (same as launch BL3 but now with shader stutters). The menus are worse (destiny has done irreparable harm to game UI design). The worst part about the series has been driving a car from objective to objective for extended periods. They decided an open world that is barren would be the best way to heighten the boredom of that experience. It continues the cycle of borderlands being several years out of date from every other fps on the market in terms of game feel and movement options. This game felt more like a poor imitation of Destiny 2 than a borderlands game. Wait 3-6 months for it to be 50% off, or wait a year for them to bundle it with all the dlc for 80% off. "

Some short and sweet reviews to wrap it up:

A Steam user review reads: " Borderlands 4 is a masterpiece. For the low price of a kidney, you get a cinematic PowerPoint presentation and a PC that can now double as a personal furnace. "
