I’ve been playing Final Fantasy VII in English and Japanese at the same time. I’ve been noticing a lot of tiny little differences. I’ve been pointing them out in a series of videos. Whoa: here is the latest episode of that series!

In today’s episode, our Final Fantasy VII buddies will meet a little girl whose friend is a dolphin, march in a parade, ride a boat, and wear military uniforms. Barret will dress up as a sailor, which is adorable.

Barret’s sailor outfit is the catalyst for a conversation which includes one of the most popular text boxes in the game, in which Cloud tells Barret, “You look like a bear wearing a marshmallow.” We will explore the Japanese script surrounding this text box in search of its deeper meaning. Somehow, I will end up telling you about a job I used to have.

Also, we’ll learn several different ways to tell someone, in Japanese, that their laughter stinks of horses.
