All Hope May Not Be Lost For The New SSX

Say goodbye to SSX: Deadly Descents and hello to SSX. The darker, survival-focused SSX that we saw for the first time late last year is just SSX now, a game that appears to have found its blue skies again.

When EA's attempt at reviving the SSX series went public, the game was described this way: "In SSX: Deadly Descents the first goal is to survive. The second, in true SSX fashion, is to look good doing it." In a new interview with Game Informer, SSX creative director Todd Batty offers a different message.

"Our core statement from day one has been, 'survive it, race it, trick it.' And in that, we have designed three major types of gameplay," he says, with the Deadly Descent mode being one of the game's pillars. The other two are Speed Descent, a racing mode, and Tricky Descent, which focuses on stunts and tricks.

"We wanted to make sure we hit the over-the-top arcadey gameplay in all of these different gameplay modes," Batty explains. "We decided to lead with the new Deadly Descent gameplay in that trailer, but all of the classic SSX style will be there, too."

As for that gear you might have heard about, like the wing suit and the ice pick axe, the explanation of those components sounds comforting too. Batty says:

"So ice axes are another piece of gear that let you do things like a wall vault move in Prince of Persia, or say you jump across a chasm, and you almost make it but you slide off the edge, instead of falling to your doom, you can smash those ice axes into the wall, vault yourself up, and keep going. Players will have a lot of gear like this that they can equip to their character, which will change how they tackle a mountain challenge."
