A Peek At Five Unreleased Games From Rare

Tuesday’s Xbox One 30-game collection Rare Replay includes five short documentary videos about five games that the legendary studio Rare started making but never released.

The requirements for unlocking these videos are very tough and likely beyond me and many other mortal gamers, but I was at least able to flick through preview clips for each video and have captured that for you all to see above.

The games are Sundown, The Fast and the Furriest, Kameo 2, Black Widow and Tailwind. Some details about these games have snuck out of Rare before, but they are mostly new to me and likely to many other people who wonder what else the people behind Banjo-Kazooie, GoldenEye, Battletoads, Blast Corps and Viva Piñata have dreamt up.

Here’s a slightly closer look at all five:

As I noted, it’s going to be very hard for most people to access the videos. To unlock the first one, for Sundown, a gamer will have to reach rank 18 in Rare Replay’s tally of player progress. As best I can tell (I’m now at rank 11), that will require gathering some 140 or so stickers. I think I’ve got a little over 60.

Stickers are earned by progressing through games and mastering very touch challenges. You can get a sticker for starting a game (easy!) in the collection but you may also get a sticker for getting a platinum medal in Blast Corps (very tough!). You can get 5-10 stickers from each game, including 10 a piece by getting all the achievements in the nine Xbox 360 games in the collection (the 360 remakes of Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, and Perfect Dark as well as both Viva Piñata games, Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero, Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts and Jetpac Refuelled. Perfecting all of those game’s Achievements—or importing any existing save files you have from your 360 that already show you’ve done that—will still only get you 90 stickers. A lot of the collection’s stickers can only be obtained by performing exceptionally well in the 16 pre-N64/Xbox/360 Rare games for the NES and Spectrum. Those games are old-school-tough. We’re talking games like R.C. Pro-Am and Battletoads. They’re hard. Then again, you can turn on cheats and play through some of them with infinite lives.

Here are some of the sticker conditions for games in the collection:

Battletoads

Grabbed by the Ghoulies

Jetpac

Blast Corps

Never underestimate the tenacity of gamers who want to unlock seemingly unlockable stuff, of course. So the question isn’t whether people will unlock these videos (and share them online) but when? What’s your guess?
