The new commenting system went live today bringing with it the ability to edit comments within a window of time and a super-class of user whose comments will hopefully be the most thoughtful, interesting among our vast pool of commenters.

The idea is that thoughtful commenters will be recognized and given the ability to point out the sorts of comments that lead more to interesting conversations and less to trolling. And, we hope, to do this in a way that won’t reduce the total number of comments. It’s a tricky balance, one that I hope we will soon find with this new system.
