Kotaku 'Shop Contest: Sega Master System Covers

Someone suggested we try a minimalist design competition, and I want to get to that, but first, I'd like to do a modern homage to the original minimalist design - The Sega Master System cover.

It needs no introduction. These covers were terrible, even for and especially by 1986 design standards. They consisted of a gray cross-hatched background over white, which you should be able to do easily, followed by the Sega logo - which still hasn't changed - a piece of clip art, and then the title, which appears to be in this font.

So this week's challenge: Do a Sega Master System cover for a famous game of current times, or at least a classic one that had great box art. Or, taking a page from Alf the Video Game, do a cover of some really, really dated concept from the mid-1980s.

You're going to succeed largely in the unsuitability of the scrap of art you use to illustrate the cover. Or in the utter ridiculousness of a game appearing on this console.

The 'shop job here is so simple I expect to see a ton of entries. So realize that increases the competition to get into the final 20. Give it some thought before firing away. But there's no rule against multiple submissions if you do one and think of a better idea later.

Post your submissions in the comments. The 20 best will get rounded up and published at the end of next Saturday. Meantime, I and the rest of the starred commentariat will approve and promote as many as we can so folks can see them and pass judgment. Remember, if you're trying to get a comment account approved, turning in a worthy 'shop is an easy path to the privilege.
