Lucasarts were once working on a Darth Maul game. It was cancelled, of course, like most things the post-millennium Lucasarts ever touched, but that doesn’t mean we can’t look over its concept art and wonder what could have been.

Note that this isn’t the first time we’ve seen art from the project—we posted about some pics a few years back—but one of the artists involved has just dumped a whole load of previously unseen images from the game (via Super Punch), so it’s a good time to circle back around and check it out.

Seems the game was in development at the time Disney bought Star Wars, and ended up being cancelled shortly afterwards after around 12 months of work. It would have been set after Return of the Jedi, with the bad guys you see below part of a “New Empire”, similar to the First Order we now have in this post-Disney Star Wars universe.

Of course, Darth Maul wasn’t the only casualty of Disney’s deal; 1313, a game that would have been about Boba Fett and the seedy underbelly of Coruscant, was binned as well.

The artist responsible for these images is is Thomas A. Szakolczay, someone whose work we’ve featured previously on Fine Art. You can see more of Thomas’ stuff at his Instagram and ArtStation pages.

As much as I like Darth Maul, I have a hard time getting behind him not actually dying in Ep one.
