The internet is abuzz with the news that, come July, Reese’s is putting out Peanut Butter Cups with tiny Reese’s Pieces inside. Corn-looking yellow candy piece aside, this doesn’t seem like that great of an idea.
After a week of teasing imagery much more compelling than the end product, Reese’s has revealed its latest Peanut Butter Cup variant, Reese’s Stuffed With Pieces. Available in both regular and Big Cup varieties, the candy is an unprecedented marriage of the brand’s two most iconic products.
The Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup has seen plenty of variants since its 1928 invention by Hershey dairy shipping manager turned candyman Harry Burnett “H. B.” Reese. We’ve gotten Big Cups filled with peanut butter and such. The Crunchy Cookie Cup featured a bed of crushed cookie crumbs. They saluted Elvis Presley with the Peanut Butter & Banana Creme Cups, and caused unending nightmares with the Inside Out Cups, which I just don’t want to think about. There have been good variants and bad variants, but most of them seemed like a good idea at the time.
This doesn’t seem like a good idea.
It’s the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup you’ve come to love over the years, only now there’s shells all in it. They should have called them Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups Unshelled, but then they might have missed out on the E.T. nostalgia dollars. Hershey product placed the hell out of that movie, didn’t they? If only Skittles had made it to the U.S. sooner.
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are chocolate cups willed with delicious Reese’s peanut butter. Reese’s Pieces are bastards born of needing something to do with the panning machines parent company Hershey set up to create Hershey-ets, their aborted attempt at M&Ms. Ironically much of Reese’s Pieces early success can be attributed to the M&Ms folks taking a pass on E.T.
So chocolate filled with peanut butter meets candy shell filled with harder peanut butter (more of a penuche, or light peanut butter fudge.) These Reese’s Stuffed With Pieces are just normal peanut butter cups with areas of more dense peanut butter walled off by sugar shards.
That does not sound like a pleasant combination. Tasty, sure, but nothing to get particularly excited about. You didn’t see the internet go crazy over this nonsense:
At best these Reese’s Stuffed With Pieces will be a mildly less convenient way to eat a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. Snacktaku has its top man looking to eat some of these when they arrive in stores in July.
