@Rachel Fogg: It's called Halo: Reach and is a prequal to Halo 1. In the book series, Eric Nylund wrote Halo: Reach as the first book in the series. The first book takes place pre-Halo 1. Thus the birth of Halo: Reach.
It is sort of an "origins" type of story. To be honest, Halo: Reach was my favorite book in the series and really opened my eyes to the story line. It makes Master Chiefs ability to kick ass believable. I'm excited for sure.
@Th12eat: The book was actually Halo: The Fall of Reach. Though I'm expecting this game to take place at SOME point during that book (since the book took place over the course of almost 20 years or somewhere thereabouts) I doubt it'll be a straight adaptation, but will more than likely be about something during that peroid that the book didn't cover.
@Rachel Fogg: It will presumably detail the "Fall of Reach," which was covered in the Halo novel that I never read. The biggest selling point, to me at least, is that it will feature several Spartans. Not sure if Master Chief was old enough to be one of them or not at that point.
Don't know that they've released any gameplay details, but I'm assuming/hoping that it will be more FPS than RTS.
@Rachel Fogg: This is the prequel to the Halo Trilogy. before the spartans were all eliminated. it will probably be very similar to ODST flow wise, but instead of multiple ODSTs you will play as multiple spartans.
@fearing: If you watched the little short-trailer that came out over the summer it showed Reach getting hit hard. I assume that this will take place smack dab in the middle of "The Fall of Reach" plot. I'm imagining cutscenes of the training and medical procedures endured by John Spartan 117 and his crew intermittently shown throughout a few space levels (where they lose Kirk), some covenant ships (as he infiltrated some during his first few missions), and lastly Reach. All of these levels will include slightly less spartans as you progress (as that is the end result of "The Fall of Reach", all but John Spartan 117 is left [or so were left to think!]).
@Th12eat: Listening to Buck's dialogue in ODST makes me think he will probably be there in some form. The way he yells about how the Covenent are going to glass Earth just like they did Reach and how Dare responds that they made it out of there etc, makes me think we'll be seeing what that's about, also at the begining she and Buck talk about how his squad is replacements, so we might see who they are replacing(the people who's silhouette's are in the teaser maybe? Maybe not, I dunno). Wether you play as a Spartan, an ODST, or something else, I think is still up for debate of course, but it'll be interesting to see.
@Communist Pope: No Master Chief will not be in Halo: Reach, unless the game details the fighting in space. All Spartans that were in the initial group are the same age as the Master Chief. There were hints in the books to new Spartan training groups, but there was no word if those groups ever came to fruition.
Also, the battle of Reach is happening at the same time as Halo 1 takes place. Reach is attacked hours before the Pillar of Autumn slipspace jumps to the first Halo. That's the reason why there were Covenant when the Pillar came out of slipspace at the beginning of Halo 1. I believe the Halo CE manual describes what is going on, and that the Pillar has indeed just left the battle of Reach.
@Communist Pope: Master Chief was around in fact but I don't think he is going to be one of the playable characters. I haven't read the novel either but I have done quite a bit of research on the story. From what I understand Master Chief wasn't actually on Reach but involved in the battle in some other way. I think this is going to be about a group of Spartans from Master Chiefs squad trying to defend Reach.
Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong for I am certainly no expert in the history or lore of Halo.
@Communist Pope: Its being done by bungie so its definately FPS, and all the spartans were the same age at the time of conscription (ud know that if you read Fall of Reach =s) it was really a good book and you should maybe read it some time
@Communist Pope: All the Spartans are around the same age.
*spoilers if you wanna read the book*
MC and a handful of others were never able to get onto Reach to help out though, they were in orbit fighting on a station. He was on the Pillar of Autumn when they jumped out using a random vector. That's when Halo:CE picks up.
*end spoilers*
I'm interested as to who you'll play as. Hopefully Bungie will incorporate a similar (aka better, more dynamic) story like in ODST while keeping the same feeling of being a Spartan.
@Sgt_UberGrunt: Yeah, I've been meaning to get around to it. Think I'll wait till after the game comes out though, just so I don't risk having anything (or at least too much) spoiled for me.
@Communist Pope: Master Chief is present during the Battle of Reach. It's set right before the first Halo game. But the game might not feature him at all.
@Communist Pope:
However i do believe that more of the spoilers of what happens will come from First Strike, where most of the spartan combat that happens of reach occurs, Fall of Reach describes why the chief wasn't on the surface of reach and instead went to halo. Fall of Reach the novel explains the Spartans training and the space battle above reach.
@maxwellzierath: I think the Covenent were there because the location was found on a Forerunner artifact that the Chief had first found in an earlier mission. The jump the Pillar did from Reach was also not technically random as Cortana had actually decifered the Forerunner artifact herself and discovered it was star patterns which gave her navigation data to the Halo. She didn't know what it would lead to at the time, but since she needed a "random" jump away from Reach to not jeapordize the location of Earth, the coordinates from the artifact were as good as any. Not tryin' to be nitpicky, but maybe it'll come into play in the game somehow or at least get a nod in the game's story.
@fearing: I never said that the jump was random. You are correct in that the jump was pulled from a star chart deciphered from an artifact found on a mission from the Master Chief earlier on. The covenant were only there first because of their superior slip space generators. I was just explaining that John was indeed there at the beginning of the battle of Reach and that Halo 1 took place around the same exact time.
What is Fall's biggest game? Grenade of Grenade: Modern Sniper 2? Dude Raider: Among Gears? Jack Black Presents: Underrated Cult Classic That Manages To Be Overrated At The Same Time? How about ViralMarketingLands? Maybe TekkenOurSweetTimeToReleaseOnA...?
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: actually if you havent heard,m grenades are toned down a bunch in this newone. no more triple frag, new things to replace the grenade option. etc.
1. Your original comment was 'this series isn't helping', before you edited it. Thus, why I hate the edit button.
This is not a series. This is just a one shot collection of anime shorts.
2. For all its whoring out, there has yet to be a bad halo game. There are people who will tell you that the games are bad, but they are simply people who cannot distinguish between 'I do not like it' and 'It is bad'.
The 'OMG' factor of Halo is surprisingly elusive and the franchise is whored out when you have... a... Link avatar? Really?
3. Its a story about space marines, aided by a really powerful marine, fighting different species of aliens, with the equivilant of space zombies trying to eat them all.
Calling the 'OMG' factor surprisingly elusive is essentially writing off every Aliens, Star Wars, Star Trek, BSG etc etc etc series ever made. Or do you just not like science fiction at all?
And I might be the lamest Halo fanboy ever to be telling you this. Never owned 2, played the shit out of 1 with high school chums and 3 only sees 360 use once every six months when my friends throw a game together.
Its okay if you don't like it, but don't pretend like its easy to find nothing to like about it, unless you're willing to admit the fault lies with you and not the games.
I do not like basketball games. Thats my fault, not theirs.
@Komrade Kayce:
Ooh, I love numbered lists. My turn my turn!
1. Actually, my first comment had to do with American companies attempting to emulate Japanese animation, however I soon remembered that a Japanese animation studio was involved in the project, hence the edit to a different comment of mine. You seem to have caught me in the middle of that process. Why you felt that worth bringing up is beyond me.
2. Halo Wars says hi.
2.5 (as you seem to have missed a number there) Personal attacks are fun, right? Easy too.
3. Believe it or not, there is a lot of trash involving space marines and aliens out there as well. So, all the successes must have something beyond these simple elements to them, right? A lot of people have found something in the Halo franchise that I haven't, hence me wondering about it.
4. (really, if you're going to make a numbered list, the least you could do is keep the format consistent :P ) Er, cool. Glad you have fun with your friends, I guess.
I'm about a halfway fan with Halo. Not enough to play every night, just enough to be able to admit that I enjoy it.
That said, I'm reeeeally looking forward to this. Not so much because its Halo, but because I really dug the animatrix, as well as the recent Iron Man anime. Japanese takes on American icons come out pretty interesting.
I just do not understand why Halo is so hated, I had this discussion on my podcast once.
We came up with what we refer to as the "Creed Effect".
Halo is itself and as a series is not any different than most games with several sequels under the old belt.
Truth of the matter is that nothing is really wrong with "Halo" as a series, it has just became so popular so quick and of course the fact that it fueled XBox fanboy's "MINE" wars that many others (Sony Fanboys) will hate it on the context they can't have it. While it's meteoric rise is something that can't be denied, it is also a big part of the animosity that people feel toward it.
People love to hate something that is popular beyond all reason. (Now this is when I finally bing in the creed effect).
Creed the band, though nothing really wrong with the group (music wasn't my flavor but they did't "suck") is generally hated....well....by everyone. Really for no better reason than at some point in time (mostly due to Scott Stapp being a jack ass) it became popular to hate them. Kids being all over them like they would be the new Led Zeppelin did't help them either.
This is really the exact same thing that has happened to Halo, It's not bad (though not for everyone). Microsoft is generally a jackass about most things, and the kids love it and say that it has given birth to the modern day FPS.
@Indie: My dislike of Halo doesn't come entirely from it's popularity. Yeah, I'm sick and tired of people chanting "Best series ever!" whenever it's mentioned, but anyways.
I just think the plot is horrible and very cliche, the main character design is bad, and, overall, it's a storyline that's been done to death and it doesn't add anything at all.
And, yes, I've played it. FPS aren't really my cup of tea. I got bored with it before I even finished one level.
Anime is only cool, when it has samurai, and or Hot school girls. So this Halo anime could never be awesome because it doesn't have those, and if it does I would love to see how they put at into the halo universe.
gunluva is prepared to drop. promoted this comment
kakashi3488 bye dad I will always miss you was starred
kakashi3488 bye dad I will always miss you was unstarred
I'm curious how this will turn out. Halo doesn't really seem like it could fit as an anime series. We'll find out soon enough though, I'm willing to try it out.
@ (Zombie) Jolan: Excuse me? Halo is greatest game of all time? Please please PLEASE tell me you're joking. That's a ridiculous statement if I've ever heard one. and if you were being sarcastic, then my mistake, but please dear god be sarcastic.
@Boom-Chicka-Ah: Here to Create a Star Commenter Empire: As racist as this may sound, animators overseas do a great job with animation and it may be cheaper to have them work on it than here in the states.
@Boom-Chicka-Ah: Here to Create a Star Commenter Empire: Because anime production companies are relatively cheap to hire (compared to live action), tend to be higher quality than American animation studios, have broad 'nerd appeal' and will sell to a broad market.
Or, to borrow a phrase from a certain Mel Brooks. MOICHANDISING!
@RedRaptor: DUDE WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? I fucking love Halo. Halo is an innovator in a field of boring cliche japanese games. It has done things no other game has done before, and no game has done since. Halo is simply the greatest video game of all time. I mean its up there with sex in terms of best thing ever.
@ACDarkKnight: Now that I have that out of my system, this looks cool and i really hope it expands on the universe and isn't like the Devil May Cry anime which ment nothing.
@RedRaptor: I hate halo. I call it ga...me of people who started playing on 360 and don't remember the classics like Mario and Zelda and Bebe's kids. Halo is the reason why the Wii took over the market. Halo is the reason why no one understands even the most blatant satire and sarcasm... Halo hates people of different colors and geographical origins. We inherited the bad games market that Halo caused. People who like Halo are just teens who are insecure in their own sexuality. Halo killed my whole family. Hitler played Halo. Halo prevented me from getting the proper background check for my E-2 visa and caused me to lose 2 jobs. Halo called your mother names... maybe.
@(Zombie) Jolan: @(Zombie) Jolan: The following retort will now be provided in Mad Lib form, ideally so people can provide simply imagine their rebuttal.
Dude you are a ______ _____. Halo copied off _______, _________, ________, and _______. It's a piece of ________, and Bungie _______ __________ ________ _______. Honestly, Japan is so much better at making _______. _______ Blows a ________ game like Halo _________ of the ______.
@(Zombie) Jolan: I knew you were. It kinda sounded like a Kanye joke, it being the center of talks and jokes this week.
Speaking of which, I'm a bit peeved because I made a joke on Facebook about Kanye interrupting Patrick Swayze's funeral, saying Michael Jackson's was better. And now it's getting passed around. Either I had the same joke other people had or Carlos Mencia ripped me off.
