After 15 years, Lego is finally making a new SpongeBob SquarePants set. And while the pricey playset Lego announced today looks fine, the new SpongeBob Brickhead that goes with it looks more like some Italian Brainrot creature I’d find in Roblox than the lovable animated sponge who, from what I hear, is absorbent, yellow, and porous.
On July 14, as reported by JaysBrickBlog, Lego revealed that it is making a new SpongeBob set, the first from the company since 2009. SpongeBob and Lego fans have long wanted new sets based on the long-running animated franchise, but it seemed like Area X had the license all locked up. But no more! SpongeBob, Squidward, and Patrick are returning to the world of Lego this September with brand new, and very nice-looking, minifigs, complete with new parts and accurate coloring.
All three are included in the upcoming 1,794-piece Bikini Bottom set that features the main homes of all three characters as they appear in the series. It looks fantastic and is filled with tons of detail for fans to admire, though I think the $220 price tag is too high for what amounts to a delicate playset. Meanwhile, let’s look at this ugly fucking Brickhead:

Dear god. What are we doing, Lego? I don’t even hate Brickheadz. I own many Star Wars Brickheadz characters and have them displayed prominently on my shelf. And I’ve liked many other Brickhead designs I’ve seen over the years. I’m not a hater. And yet, I look at this SpongeBob SquarePants Brickhead and hate it immensely. I’m not alone, either.
“How do you mess up a SpongeBob BrickHeadz LMAO,” replied one person on BlueSky. Another user on Twitter said: “They turned him into a fridge.” Damn, but accurate.
He’s too thin and tall. His hands are too small. And his eyes are too big for the shape of his body and head. I do appreciate the printed piece for his pants and tie, but that’s about all the nice things I can say about this thing. At least he’s only $13.
The new Bikini Bottom set and ugly SpongeBob Brickhead both launch on September 1. Hopefully we get some more Lego SpongeBob sets in the future.
