Yep, Blizzard Still Makes The Best Trailers

The wait is over, World of Warcraft fans and people who love amazing short CGI films. Blizzard has finally pulled the lid off the next big WoW expansion, Warlords of Draenor. And it looks...well, what did you expect from the king of video game trailers?

Look, I'd be lying if I told you I understood every facet of the complex web of inter-Orc relationships that just played out over those glorious four minutes and fifty-two seconds. It'd take a real expert to explain that. But that's what makes Blizzard so great: I don't have to. The theme that this stunning Warlords of Draenor cinematic played on should be familiar to anyone with a passing interest in Warcraft and its deep lore: the Orcs want to be free. And they'll go to insane, murderous lengths to guarantee this freedom.

Also, keep in mind that this isn't just any old World of Warcraft expansion. Warlords of Draenor is finally delivering some serious fan-service to all the gamers who wax poetic about the good old days when Warcraft was a real-time strategy game. One of the best RTS games out there for a good long while, if you ask me.

How are they doing that, exactly? By going back in time, of course! Warlords of Draenor casts players back to the days the original Warcraft RTS games took place. Here's how Kotaku's Mike Fahey broke it down late last year based on a description from 2013's Blizzcon:

At the end of the current World of Warcraft storyline, former Horde Warchief Garrosh Hellscream is taken away in chains, to be put on trial. That trick never works. He escapes trial and meets up with a new friend with the ability to bend time.

Garrosh travels back to when the world made sense of him, his intent is to redeem the Orcish ideal. He wants the Orcs to be proud conquerors again. His most critical mission is to stop the moment when the Orcs of old drank demon blood and fall under the sway of The Burning Legion. He will build an Iron Horde with the Chieftans of Old, empowered with the tech of the present. He will lead his Iron Horde through a time-spanning Dark Portal to conquer the present day.

Oh Garrosh, I feel you. The world made a lot more sense to me when there were Warcraft strategy games too. But hey, if this is what Blizzard has to offer, I'm not complaining. Because remember: WoW is getting a major visual upgrade with the new expansion too. And the Orcs are looking better than ever.
