Top Nintendo Creator: Link Should Be Played By a Woman in a Zelda Movie

Nintendo doesn’t have plans—that we know of—to put any of their iconic characters into big-budget movies. But the guy who helped shape some of the most beloved Legend of Zelda games thinks that woman should play Link if a movie happens.

The MTV video above (via GoNintendo) features Shigeru Miyamoto and A Link to the Past director/Wind Waker producer Takashi Tezuka talking about pie-in-the-sky silver screen adaptations for Nintendo’s biggest franchises. Mario’s creator thinks that Mario and Luigi should be played by twins if another Super Mario Bros. movie ever gets made.

It’s important to note exactly what Tezuka says when he’s talking the casting for a potential Legend of Zelda movie. “It would be very fun and awesome if Link was played by a female actress, a boyish female actress,” the Nintendo veteran says. Notice that he’s referring to the gender of the performer, not the lead character. Given that he says a “boyish female actress,” Tezuka doesn’t seem to be suggesting that the Hero of Time should be changed to the Heroine of Time. Link tends to look androgynous, which would tie into a long history of women playing male characters. But it’s interesting that these thoughts come to light after all the speculation surrounding Hyrule Warriors and the upcoming Zelda game for the Wii U.
