There Will Be More Than One Model Of The NGP

And not all of them will have 3G connectivity, it seems.

Speaking after yesterday's big PSP2 / NGP reveal in Tokyo, Sony Computer Entertainment's chief Andrew House told game site Eurogamer "The first thing to clarify, which I'm not sure the presentation did a perfect job of doing today, is that all of the devices will have Wi-Fi capability; a separate SKU will have 3G."

"So the user gets a choice. Wi-Fi is available wherever, which clearly is the most important aspect of connectivity and that connected experience; 3G will be a subset of that."

Why the divide? Well, like Apple's iPad - which makes a similar distinction between models - the 3G-less version will surely be cheaper. Which could be important for a handheld that's no doubt going to be on the expensive side.

It's also because, while 3G network deals are relatively easy for Sony to tie up in Japan, in the West - and particularly in Europe - things could be trickier. Networks could seek exclusivity, some countries could skip the 3G version altogether, etc etc. So having a wi-fi only option makes sense!
