As another wave of virtual reality technology breaks along the shore of humanity this week with PSVR, it’s only a matter of time until someone becomes the first person to die as a result of virtual reality. “We made some core decisions early on that we weren’t going to kill people.” That’s what Piers Jackson who worked on Rigs as part of Guerilla Games said this time last year.
Virtual reality is simply too immersive to subject players to that kind of thing. Of course, it’s bound to happen sooner or later, at least according to people like Denny Unger, who said not that terribly long ago that “We’re very close to having the first death in VR.” But don’t let that hold you back! I’m sure VR is still safer than driving a car. Unless you’re driving the car while in VR. Please don’t do that.
