1-1 Homage
At the beginning of the movie, Mario and Luigi run through a construction site, which is clearly modeled after 1-1 in Super Mario Bros. (1985). We can see the signature brick formation in this shot; the house number, the two paint buckets, and the loudspeaker are the four Question Mark blocks. The scene even ends with a flagpole sequence, where Mario slides down a metal sign post.
