Team Fortress 2 update time! The folks at Valve are clearing the air about any confusion about gaining items. That's awfully nice of them.
The Spy Vs. Sniper update brought randomization to item unlocks, dropping Achievement based milestones. This was supposed to address the spate of specific classes populating servers every time a new update shipped and to deal with imbalance-the best players were scoring unlockable items much quicker than the new players.
Valve addresses questions about the new item drop system. Questions like "Why did we build a new system?" or "What did we do?" or "How long do I have to play to get an item?"
