Crowdfunding website Patreon was known as a haven for uncensored erotic games that couldn’t exist on traditional storefronts, but a recent crackdown on adult material has users worried about the future of such fringe games.
Breeding Season, a sex game that billed itself as “Harvest Moon meets Hentai,” was one of the biggest projects funded on Patreon: according to tracking website Pledge Society, the title was raking in a whopping $42.3k a month. But as of yesterday, development on Breeding Season has ceased completely.
It’s not easy to make money running a video game website. In June 2015, popular mobile outlet TouchArcade said it was having cash problems and asked for help, and lots of people did—including mobile developers. But recently, following a mixed game review, one developer decided to pull their funding.
