Like Sony and Microsoft have since learned, if you’re going to sell a console and charge for online play, you need to sweeten the deal, so Nintendo will likewise be giving out free games to anyone subscribing to its online service on the Switch.

That app stuff is all well and handy, but look at that second point. Free games are fun, especially when the SNES ones have been retrofitted for online play!

It’s unclear, though, whether these will be games you can download and keep, or simply made available for the month then rescinded (similar to Steam’s “free weekends”).

Update: 1/13/2017, 1:50 PM: Polygon has confirmed that the free games will only be playable for the free month, after which users will have to pay to continue.

Where do I not sign up?

So let me get this straight.

  • Usual first party
  • Not a great amount of current Third Party already
  • Pay for online
  • Three years late to the party
  • All for £50 more than its rivals
