Previously, Square Enix was working with external studio CyberConnect2 to develop Final Fantasy VII Remake. But now, Square Enix will be making the game in-house.

Third party studio CyberConnect2 is perhaps best known for its Naruto and .hack games. Back in 2015, it was revealed that Square Enix was working with the studio on the title.

During a recent Mobius Final Fantasy stream, Square Enix dev Naoki Hamaguchi addressed the issue, saying this was a “sensitive subject.”

“I’ve taken over the development side of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake,” Hamaguchi said. “Up until now, development has progressed by receiving external collaboration, but from here on out, with production and quality in mind, we’re shifting to our in-house organization. This company decision was made wanting to control quality as well as keeping the schedule stable.”

Final Fantasy VII Remake is being headed up by Tetsuya Nomura. Heh.

Why is Square Enix no longer working with external studio CyberConnect2 on FFVII Remake? In a December 2015 interview with Famitsu, Square Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase said that Nomura complained about a CyberConnect2 trailer for FFVII Remake and wanted it done in a more Square Enix style.

Whatever the reason, see you in 2030, Final Fantasy VII Remake!

From a concept video for PS3, to an episodic announcement for PS4, will we play it first on PS5 then have it ported to the Switch 3....

Wonder if it’ll be out before or after Kingdom Hearts 3 (or half-life 3 while we’re at it).
