Dreamcast saga Shenmue II ended on a cliffhanger. More than nine years later, fans still want closure and continue to demand a long overdue sequel to one of the most expensive games ever made.

Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki is working on a social game Shenmue Town — not exactly the Shenmue game people have been asking for!

"I think Shenmue has a substantial image, and lots of preparation is needed to make something substantial," Suzuki told "I want to do [Shenmue] 3 like the previous volumes. There are numerous requests from fans for 3."

Suzuki acknowledged that tens of thousands of individuals even signed a petition for Shenmue III. "I want to fulfil my duty to the series," he added.

Earlier this month, Sega told Kotaku that Yu Suzuki is no longer at the company, adding, "We're hoping to announce some joint venture soon." But since Sega is now involved in Shenmue Town, that is a good sign for future Shenmue titles — Shenmue III, even.

Sega simply doesn't have what it takes. And whoever controls the money is in no way going to greenlight this after looking back at how well the other two sold, to say nothing of the development costs for what a 3rd would run.

It's like waiting for a new Vagrent's Story, from SE, you know it's never going to happen.
