What is it? Ronin, a turn-based action/platformer hybrid where you play as a teenage ninja girl who needs to plan her moves very carefully.

Who is making it? One-man dev studio Tomasz Waclawek

Did we play it? Nope, but we took in a live demo at PAX East in Boston two weeks ago. If you played Gunpoint, Ronin might look familiar. It does in fact take inspiration from Tom Francis’ hit spy game and Francis himself loves that Waclawek is making a game that’s sort of in the same wheelhouse.

Anything stand out about it? Ninjas in video games are mostly all about that super-fast, slash-and-dash action. And that’s all and good in games like Ninja Gaiden. Ronin is different. If you don’t figure out your moves ahead of time, you’ll never get the vengeance you so richly deserve. Some enemies—like the sword-wielding samurai—will require even more planning since it’ll take more than one hit to eliminate them.

Got a fun detail? Ronin’s heading to PC, Mac and Linux later this year from Devolver Digital but it was originally meant to be a mobile game. The GIF up top comes from a mock-up of the between-mission menu screen created by Ronin artist/animator VanRipper.
