For over a year now, anticipation around a legendary Pokémon called Hoopa grew exponentially—people found out about the monster via a leak in 2013, and the only way to attain it was to hack the game. Its taboo nature, plus its cool design made generating hype for Hoopa really easy.
And then The Pokémon Company unveiled a trailer for the upcoming Pokémon movie, Hoopa and the Clash of Ages Trailer. You can watch it in the YouTube video above, if you’d like.
While the trailer gives us a chance to see some of Hoopa’s great moves in action—it can teleport other legendaries to its location at will, just as the leaks predicted—people can’t help but feel a tad disappointed about Hoopa. Or, to be more specific, people think Hoopa’s voice in the English dub of the movie kind of sucks:
It might seem like an overreaction, or perhaps not particularly noteworthy in a world where English dubs are generally awful. But again, the context here is that people have been waiting for a long time to be able to acquire Hoopa legitimately. Now that fans can actually hear what the monster sounds like in action, well, maybe Hoopa isn’t the badass people were expecting it would be.
That said, Hoopa does have two forms. It’s entirely possible that the second form, which looks way more menacing, might have better voice-acting in the English dub. And if nothing else, Serebii reports going to the movie gives you a chance to acquire legendaries including Groudon, Kyogre, Kyurem, Dialga, Palkia or Giratina—not bad! Maybe sitting through Hoopa’s grating voice will be worth it for some fans.
