The PlayStation 5 Slim is seeing a pretty significant discount over at Amazon… kind of. Last month Sony announced price increased across all models of its current generation console, with the disc edition Slim version jumping up from $550 to $650. That being the case, Amazon has updated its list price to reflect the new messaging from Sony, but have now marked it 16% off, bringing it back down to $549. So really, it’s the same price as it has been, but no telling when Amazon will raise it up to the new MSRP so this might be your last chance to get the PS5 for its old price.
PS5 Has No Games? Not Sure About That
Critics and meme-makers have long joked that the PS5 “has no games.” In reality, the console’s library is far from barren. Titles like Ghost of Yōtei showcase some of the best visuals and gameplay of the generation, while Returnal delivers a tense, roguelike third-person shooter experience with strong Metroid vibes. For a lighter, more whimsical experience, Astro Bot revives the 3D mascot platformer in spectacular fashion, earning accolades as 2024’s Game of the Year at The Game Awards.
The PS5 has some highly anticipated titles coming out on the horizon later this year. The team behind Returnal has its high-action follow-up Saros coming out, featuring Rahul Kohli in the player protagonist role. And then of course, we’ve got Grand Theft Auto 6 coming out in the Fall which will surely take over every conversation in gaming for the foreseeable future.
If you missed out on the PS4 generation, there’s so much more waiting for you. The Last of Us: Part 1 and Part 2 remain essential, with the first widely regarded as a landmark in video game storytelling. The second is more divisive but no less compelling. These games, along with other standout titles like God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man, are now enhanced for the PS5, giving both newcomers and returning players a chance to experience them in improved detail and performance.
I’d be remiss to mention that Mass Effect: Legendary Edition happens to be on sale on the digital storefront. That game packs over a hundred hours of some of the best RPG storytelling and combat spanning three games and it’s only $6 right now. Six freaking dollars.
A subscription to PlayStation Plus Premium opens the doors to hundreds of games spanning multiple PlayStation generations. From Control and Kingdom Hearts 3 to Final Fantasy VII Remake, the service is a treasure trove of beloved titles waiting to be explored.
Expandable Storage
The PS5 Slim ships with a 1TB SSD, but the actual usable storage comes in just over 850GB once system software is accounted for. That’s enough for a handful of big games, but if your library tends toward ambitious, storage-hungry titles, expansion is simple. The console supports internal SSD upgrades, and brands like Crucial, Samsung, and Western Digital offer models with heatsinks built for compatibility. Installation is straightforward—basically a screwdriver and a few minutes, plus any of the many tutorials available on YouTube.
