It’s the end of an era for Blizzard, as the company announced today plans to say farewell to the name Battle.net, which they’ve used to refer to their internet platform since 1996. From a practical standpoint, nothing is changing, Blizzard says. But they’re ditching the name Battle.net, 20 years after the service launched. When Battle.net…
Xbox has released October’s Games With Gold lineup: Super Mega Baseball: Extra Innings, The Escapists, MX vs ATV Reflex, and I Am Alive. Remember: they’re “free” if you’ve paid for an Xbox Live Gold subscription.
Whenever Destiny gets an expansion, the vendors in the tower finally get new weapons in stock. Those of us who obsess over perks and rolls and stats promptly have an anxiety attack deciding which one to buy first. If there’s one thing I’ve learned after two years of Destiny, it’s that I’ll be able to…
A lengthy new blog post from the developers of The Division outlines major changes being made to character stats, skills and gear as part of the big October 1.4 patch that’s intended to make the endgame fun. The update, including big changes being made to popular skills like Smart Cover, will be playable on a…
Paladins, a video game that looks very much like Overwatch, has taken some heat for its similarities to Blizzard’s popular team shooter—to the point where last night one of Paladins’ top developers felt compelled to write a big ol’ Reddit post explaining how it isn’t a clone at all. In the Reddit post, Hi-Rez Studios…
One of my favorite new things in Destiny, a video game filled with horrible jumping puzzles, is a horrible jumping puzzle. Specifically: climbing a bigass mountain. The new social space in Rise of Iron, which came out yesterday, gives you access to a snowy mountain range called Felwinter’s Peak. The new social space, Iron Temple,…
During a recent round table at Namco Bandai headquarters in Tokyo, I asked From Software’s Hidetaka Miyazaki about the future of Dark Souls, as well as what else the studio is working on. The good news is yes, a new Armored Core is coming. The bad news is that, at least for the foreseeable future,…

In the past few days, a rare Pokémon has been spotted in Tokyo’s Odaiba. Loads of people have shown up to catch it, and the crowds have become so big that the police were called in to handle the situation. Which has looked like this: Damn. Folks have been running to catchLapras, ignoring traffic lights…
Earlier this summer, Hideaki Anno apologized to Evangelion fans, saying he was sorry to keep them waiting. Now he says he’s working hard on Eva. The hold up has been Godzilla Resurgence, which Anno helmed. The movie has been a smash hit in Japan, and as Yahoo! Japan reports, when he was asked whether or…
Like the Gintama anime? Good news, they are doing a new season. The premiere date hasn’t been announced yet, so no word on that.
The regular chocolate fries were not disgusting, so maybe these will be good? To mark Halloween, which is now very much a thing in Japan, McDonald’s is putting out fries with chocolate and pumpkin sauce. They’ll be available from September 28*. Maybe we’ll get a Halloween burger, too? *Jack-o’-lantern not included. Kotaku East is your…

Last week, Valve made some big changes to Steam reviews. Developers, especially, didn’t love them Developers were worried by the part where Steam would default to not showing reviews by people who received game keys from places like Kickstarter, as opposed to directly purchasing from Steam. Valve made the change to counter fraudulent reviews and…
Welcome to 2016, an age in which Nike and EA Sports collaborate on an actual pair of FIFA series football boots (soccer cleats, Americans). Weirdest part is: in a world where crazy/garish boot design is now the norm in this sport, these are really good. The idea with the pixels on one side and a…
A day may come when I stop posting The Witcher cosplay on this blog. An hour of wolves and shattered shields. But it is not this day. This is Madame Skunk in Triss’ Witcher 2 getup, who along with her partner Weasel cosplays in Germany as everything from Metal Gear to Borderlands to Dragon Age…
Yono is a game in the style of classic, top-down Legend of Zeldas, but also it stars an elephant. It’s got combat, puzzles, and treasure hunts, as well as “delicate cultural and political situations” among humans, zombies, and robots. It’ll be out on PC at… some point. Definitely worth keeping an eye on until then.
The new paid Death Star expansion for Star Wars Battlefront won’t significantly alter the game’s reputation as a fairly casual shooter designed for quick, chaotic fun. But it does add an interesting three-stage mode that culminates with the possible destruction of the Death Star. That new mode at least makes a session with the game…
