Overwatch has revealed its 51st hero, and despite a fair bit of speculation and chatter from fans leading up to the announcement, it is not Frankie, the drone-using Deadlock Gang member who debuted in the series’ novels. Instead, it looks like this is a brand new character named Sierra who still has ties to the faction, but as their enemy.
We haven’t seen Sierra in-game just yet, but Blizzard released an animated trailer showing her getting into a scrap with Emre. The cyborg gets the upper hand and escapes with Freja, who tells Sierra that she should back off on her plans to fight Talon and the Deadlock Gang as they assist Vendetta in her worldwide conquest. Though we don’t see her kit as it will appear in Overwatch, we do get a sense of Sierra’s fighting style as she goes toe to toe with Emre. She seems agile, has a pulse rifle, and fires a homing device that attaches to an enemy, tracks their movements and directs projectiles to their location. At one point she links herself to her drone, which then flies her around the battlefield,so she may have some significant mobility options.
All of this will become clear when Sierra joins the roster with the start of season 2 next week on April 14. We’ll see how she factors into Overwatch’s broader story, as Blizzard has said that every new hero that comes to the game in the next year will play a part in the game’s Talon-centric storyline that kicked off last season with the defeat of Doomfist. She seems to have beef with the Deadlock Gang, but that’s all we really know about her thus far. Sierra will obviously be the headliner of season 2, but Anran will also be getting her long-awaited redesign.
