With our Japanese correspondent Brian Ashcraft waist-deep in the Japanese Vita launch, commenter Mykalt45 wonders if you folks think it's a worthy purchase, or purely in "3DS territory".

So, I haven't kept up with the Vita launch, so I am curious to know what the consensus is so far. Are we looking at a pretty solid device, or is it in 3DS territory? I'm wondering if I should consider getting it, even though I don't really game very much right now, even though I have a PlayStation 3, iPhone, Mac, and iPad. I already played through Uncharted 3, and I am waiting for StarHawk and Mass Effect 3.

Feel like it's a complete waste of time. They're trying to do too much, on top of trying to get it to rival the home consoles, that it defeats the purpose of what I liked portable gaming systems for in the first place.

I want 2D sidescrollers that are brimming with artistic design. I want RPGs with simplistic graphics and attractive menu systems. I want text dialogue!

If I wanted to play Uncharted, I'd turn on my PS3. If I wanted to phone a friend, I'd pick up the phone. If I wanted to surf the web, I'd go on my computer or laptop.

Portable gaming systems should not strive to be what their home console counterparts are. That's what made them unique in the first place.

Vita, shmita.
