The hit basketball series NBA 2K is returning this October, of course. Sports games usually come back, and this time NBA 2K13 will have competition from a returning EA-made NBA Live.

No sweat for NBA 2K, right? That series has been terrific.

But what's this about a Wii U version?

From the just-released press release about the new game... "will be available on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 in North America and October 5, 2012 internationally for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, PSP (PlayStation Portable) system, Wii system
and Windows PC. A Wii U version of NBA 2K13 will be available in the launch window, at a later date."

Later in the press release, publisher Take Two indicates that "the Wii U version of the title will be available during the holiday season."

You can read these statements a couple of ways, but at first glance they appear to place the Wii U's launch some time after October 5. Not a huge shock, but a narrowing of the possible release window.

For context, the Wii launched in North America on November 19, 2006; the GameCube on November 18, 2001; and the Nintendo 64 on September 29, 1996.

By the way, 2K 13 fans, it appears that the All-Star game will be a pre-order bonus: "Fans that pre-order NBA 2K13 for the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 will receive a new downloadable NBA All-Star content package presented by Sprite. This add-on content will be set in Houston, the site of the 2013 NBA All-Star Game and will allow fans to stage their own NBA All-Star Game, including three NBA All-Star events - the Foot Locker Three Point Shootout, BBVA Rising Stars Challenge, and the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest featuring all-new intuitive, pick-up-and-play controls."

We're checking with Take Two to find out if you can play the All-Star game in 2K 13 without pre-ordering.

Nintendo just won't let third parties announce Wii U game release dates yet. They have a rule about it that nobody can announce release dates for Wii U games until the console's release date is announced at E3.

Next week, everything will be revealed.
