After multiple delays left the fate of last-gen versions of Mortal Kombat X hazy, Warner Bros. finally makes it official: they’re not going to finish them.
Released in April for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, Mortal Kombat X was originally slated to hit the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime during the summer. In May retailer GameStop swapped the placeholder release date of June 2 to December 31, which is GameStop shorthand for a shrug.
At that point there was very little hope the games would ever come out. In a post on the game’s community site yesterday (via Gamespot), Warner Bros. quashed what little was remaining.
After months of development, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has come to the regrettable conclusion that we cannot release Mortal Kombat X for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Please know our teams worked diligently to meet the quality standards set by the current-gen versions of the game. We were not able to get the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions to the quality expected of a Mortal Kombat game and are very sorry for not being able to deliver the products as originally planned.
Those who preordered the game probably shouldn’t have.
