Little Guy Solves Puzzles In A Big, Beautiful World 900x His Size In Gecko Gods

New lizard-loving indie game offers a vibrantly colorful adventure, mysterious temples and a tiny sailboat

I usually have a low tolerance for “just a little guy” games. But the moment it’s about a bird or small reptile instead of a mouse or dog, I’m afraid you have me cornered. That’s just one of the reasons I’ve had my eye trained on Gecko Gods, a vibrantly colorful adventure about ancient temples, island obstacles, and a tiny teal lizard using a personal sailboat.

In Gecko Gods, you play as a small reptile washed ashore on a mysterious, serene island. Across this archipelago, you come across a vast network of abandoned temples. Within are statues and shrines seemingly built to deities that share your likeness, albeit 900 times larger than you. Overcoming your stature, you’ll push, pull, and prod your way around ancient mechanisms to unlock new chambers and strange magics. Gobble insects, battle sentries, and board your own boat to turn a big world larger, especially for a squat creature such as yourself.

Gorgeous pastel tones, breezy sounds and relaxed landscapes betray a game that can still lash its tongue. Even medium-sized threats can prove to be a difficult challenge at your height. The ability to make bold leaps and climb across ceilings invites you to think a little more three dimensionally about dungeon puzzles and exploration, at least compared to your usual Zelda fare.

For those who enjoy tomb raiding on their own terms, or open world adventure games pared down on quests and collectables, Gecko Gods is a charming afternoon expedition. Plus, us lizard-heads finally getting some more options out here. Watch in real time as my cute animal video gaming reservations melt away. And if you’d happen to prefer a gecko-starring game with wisenheimer jokes about Bruce Vilanch, well as it happens there are a surprising amount of video games for you too.

Gecko Gods is now available on Steam, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.
