Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski once made video games about green rabbits fighting turtles, a series known as Jazz Jackrabbit. Epic Games' former mascot returns after a long hiatus, only this time as a proof-of-concept twin-stick shooter.

The latest version of Epic's Unreal Engine development kit has been released, adding support for iOS devices—recently used in Infinity Blade and Epic Citadel—and featuring a development tutorial built around a Jazz Jackrabbit shooter for the iPhone. Unless you plan on downloading and developing with the UDK on your iOS device of choice, this Jazz Jackrabbit game won't mean much to you.

But if you're interested to see what a modern day, Epic Games-built, anthropomorphic rabbit mascot game looks like, here's your chance.

I don't like it. I miss the ramps and loop da loops.

I know some may say that Jazz Jackrabbit was just Sonic the Hedgehog with a gun but that's what made the game so good.

What I would have preferred is the game keep its high speed running and add the enemies in a pattern-like sequence like what you see in conventional top down spaceship shooters or bullet hell video games.

So imagine, you are in a 3D environment much like sonic unleashed (daytime of course), but with a more open track. And as you zip through the level enemies from the foreground and background will come at you.

I wish they just stuck closer to the original game.
