Japan Starts Buying Hardware Again (Portable Hardware, That Is)

Japanese gamers started ramping up their hardware purchases this week, giving the Media Create hardware chart a little kick in the old pantsu after weeks of dreary post-holiday numbers. Who performed best?

The Nintendo DSi, unsurprisingly, which sold a respectable 55,000 units. Not bad for little in the way of new releases on that platform. Long tail, you know?

The PSP also got a little boost, likely thanks to strong sales of Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2 and World Soccer Winning Eleven 2009, currently Japan’s bestselling games.

There wasn’t much good news on the home console front, however.

Even with solid sales of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time, the Wii saw a drop in hardware sales, week to week. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 didn’t change much, sticking closely to last week’s numbers.
