After taking a backseat to Final Fantasy XIII and the PlayStation 3, Nintendo had a very merry Christmas week in Japan, another 215,000 Wiis in Japanese gamers' waggle-hungry, Mushroom Kingdom-platforming hands.

With a little help from Mario, Luigi and two Toads, the Wii scored first place on Media Create's weekly hardware chart, nearly doubling PS3s sales during the same period. Suppose that selling a half-million copies of New Super Mario Bros. Wii will do that for one's platform.

The non-LL sized DSi managed to just squeak past the PS3 this week, giving Nintendo second place, with the PSP managing a fourth place showing. And look, there's the PSPgo.

  • Wii - 215,129
  • Nintendo DSi - 113,984
  • PlayStation 3 - 110,519
  • PSP - 105,801
  • Nintendo DSi LL - 81,430
  • Nintendo DS Lite - 17,695
  • Xbox 360 - 6,489
  • PSPgo - 4,192
  • PlayStation 2 - 3,747

Let me ask something...

Is there anything Sony or MS can do to beat Nintendo?

Because the Christmas sales are showing Nintendo beat both single handily. Nintendo has won the console war. Face it. We can hate the mediocre shovelware and some can try to spread how great the lineup of both systems is and hope it will catch on but Nintendo is just a runaway train now. 2009 was supposed to be the year the Wii submitted to supposed market changes but it doesn't look like it.

From the way it looks like, the Slim didn't have that big of a sales impact Sony wanted or if it did, it was short term. I'm not the biggest Wii fan but NSMB Wii is a wonderful wonderful game that deserves its success versus the glorified expansion pack that is L4D2 or retreads like Modern Warfare 2. My hats off to Nintendo. Success is success. They played their cards well and won.
