DISCUSSION

Microsoft's auto renew is borderline a scam.

I had an account back on the original xbox. Didn't just turn off auto-renew, I cancelled the account. Microsoft continues to charge me for renewals.

I go online with my computer and cancel my account. Microsoft continues to charge me for renewals.

I call and cancel my account. Microsoft continues to charge me for renewals.

I cancel my card and get a new one. 2 years later Microsoft convinces my credit card company that I owe them like $200 for previous renewals.

I call Microsoft up again, explain the situation and get told the only way to shut down the renewals is to use the xbox the account is one.

I finally got far enough up the ladder to get someone to kill the account, but they wouldn't give me my money back.

Moral of the story (for me): Always use Gift Cards for you Console needs.
