PlayStation 4s Sold and That Matters More Than You Think

Stamping out any doubt that the PS4 is selling, Sony announced today that 10 million consoles have new homes. That figure is from the tail end of July, putting the PS4 only slightly behind where the Wii was nine months in and well ahead of both the Xbox One and the Wii U at 5 million and 6.7 million, respectively. Games for the system have done just as well thus far with Sony claiming that PS4 software sales accounted for half of all games sold on current-gen systems.

All of that means that Sony bigwigs are likely to invest more in services like Project Morpheus and PlayStation TV. In an interview with GamesIndustry International, SCEE exec Jim Ryan is confident about the future of the console.

"All of these things require investment. It's much easier to make decisions like that from a position of relative success, relative strength, rather than a world where PlayStation 4 was struggling, where our momentum wasn't great."

Contrast that position of positivity and confidence with Sony's silence regarding the Vita, and it's not too hard to see that the people holding the purse strings are a lot more interested in what now seems to be a sure win.
