Help the newly-regenerated Eleventh Doctor, his gorgeous companion Amy Pond, and the Eleventh Doctor's hair in Doctor Who: The Adventure Games, free interactive episodes of the beloved time-travelling TV series, coming this June from the BBC and Sumo Digital.
The Eleventh Doctor made his full-length episode debut this weekend in The Eleventh Hour, introducing us to Matt Smith's quirky take on everyone's favorite Time Lord, along with Amy Pond's strong-will, determination, and heart-withering cuteness. The new cast, new theme song arrangement, and new logo seem to usher the show into a new, more modern age.
An age where interactive adventure games based on the series are just around the corner.
The aptly-titled Doctor Who: The Adventure Games is a series of four downloadable interactive episodes of Doctor Who, starring digital versions of the Eleventh Doctor and Amy. The games will be released free for the Mac and PC starting in June.
The BBC isn't just handing one of their top properties over to some random development team either. The show's stars are lending their voices, the show's composer is creating the music, and the episodes are produced by, among others, show executive producer Steven Moffat and one Charles Cecil, the creator of the acclaimed Broken Sword series and Beneath a Steel Sky.
The games' development is being handled by Sumo Digital, who has worked on the Broken Sword series as well as Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing.
"Children don't just watch Doctor Who - they join in. They make up games, invent their monsters, create their own stories," says Steven Moffat, Head Writer and Executive Producer, Doctor Who. "Now, there's something else - now they can be the Doctor in brand new episodes. Doctor Who: The Adventure Games will offer fans of the Doctor a unique opportunity to enter his world, face his challenges and grapple with his deadliest foes.
It bears noting that these games are considered to be within the Doctor Who canon, or as Piers Wenger, Doctor Who executive producer puts it:
"There aren't 13 episodes of Doctor Who this year. There are 17 - four of which are interactive. Everything you see and experience within the game is part of the Doctor Who universe: we'll be taking you to places you've only ever dreamed about seeing - including locations impossible to create on television."
I'm so excited I'm getting all tingly. I've watched the first episode of the new season, and Matt seems to capture a little bit of both Tenth Doctor David Tennant and Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston. If he keeps that up, he could wind up one of the best Doctor's yet. He'll certainly be one of the more interactive ones.
