Fallout 4 Graphics Mod Makes The Wasteland Look Fantastic

Even the post-apocalypse can be beautiful, under the right circumstances.

Commonwealth HQ Landscape Overhaul is a mod created by a Nexus mod member known as Printerkop, and you should definitely check it out. As the name implies, it re-does the textures for Fallout 4’s terrain, and the changes are pretty noticeable! The shrubbery is more distinct, there’s a wider variety of terrain and rock, the soil is better, leaves look crunchier, hell, even the garbage looks more realistic.

Wilsonator notes that the overhaul mod doesn’t really cause performance issues, which is great news.

The Alvin Greene Dream

It’s cool when people do stuff like this, but I feel like greater detail actually draws my eye to the fact that it’s ultimately a “flat” texture. Lower detail, especially on objects that aren’t the focus, but rather part of an overall visual atmosphere, allows your brain to fill in the gaps. It looks less realistic, but somehow more real.

I liken it to what happened with the 48fps Hobbit film, where many people (rightly) recoiled from the footage shown at that rate. The fact of the matter is that, when you have more information coming in, it’s easier to notice the small, inevitable imperfections in the created system, whether we’re talking about quirks in an actor’s motions and wardrobe, or the fact that moving a video game’s camera around reveals the flatness of the textures on its 3D objects.

It’s easy to come to the conclusion that the artists at Bethesda simply didn’t come up with very good assets, and that it took modders to really make the game beautiful. But the imperfections I mentioned before are things that artists must manage to blend away, while at the same time giving the impression of a fully-realized, sufficiently detailed, and visually consistent world. It’s not an easy job, and I don’t think these sorts of high-detail mods are an objective improvement merely because they are “more detailed.”
