Firmware 2.42 Is Live

Sony's put out a ninja firmware update, 2.42. It took eons to download, and it seems to be a meaty update. We can't yet decipher what exactly it does (wasn't the XMB's "Turn-Off System" button there since 2.40), so we imagine it's loads of back-end stuff. And according to the PlayStation.Blog, that's exactly what it does:

This update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software.

Not so sexy, but hey. Not every firmware update can be sexy. That's just the way it is.

DISCUSSION

Wow, Sony does love their updates. Seriously, unless there was just something game breaking I don't see a reason to release such small updates. Anymore I update my PSP every other month, I don't see the need to download such small updates. If I'm going to risk the chance of bricking something, I'd rather it was because the update was absolutely needed and not some piddly one-hundredth of a decimal change on the version number.

Wow, improving the quality of playback on PS3 software. I would hope that a PS3 would play PS3 software fine and not need an update to improve playback quality. But, maybe I'm being too optimistic for this generation of game consoles.
