We’re three days out from Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave and Nintendo has released another trailer highlighting the game. But I don’t wanna talk about that right now. Nintendo’s Japanese Fortune’s Weave Twitter account has been doing Seiros’ work, revealing characters and their bios long before they show up anywhere in English (if they can be found in English at all). I need to discuss the latest character info dump, specifically: Him.

According to the auto-translation (and my own rusty katakana-reading skills), this isekai’d Juggalo is named Jester. There’s not too much more information on him. He wields a sword, has an ability that that lets him hit for increased damage after a dodge, and likes “opponents whose faces contort in terror.” Fire Emblem has long had a mechanic in which, if you increased a character’s support level high enough, you could reach an ultimate S-rank and get a special cutscene. Sometimes those cutscenes are platonic in nature, other times they’re romantic. I need to be able to romance this clown.
It speaks to the impressive character design in Fortune’s Weave that I’m so willing to play against my video game type. I like good, wholesome boys. Way back in Fire Emblem Fates, I had a family with the sweet and loyal Jakob. Then, in Three Houses, I ignored the war criminal Edelgard and edgelord Dimitri for the relatively sunnier Claude. Though primed for romantic encounters with its whole bond ring system, I ironically forewent romances in Fire Emblem Engage because the game itself wasn’t all that engaging. But Jester just speaks to me. Not the part of me that that thinks, “I can fix him,” but a smaller one whispering, “We can be worse together.”
Beyond romances, there are all sorts of different characters that I’m fascinated by, specifically all the characters of color in this game. Video games, especially AAA affairs, usually only have a token or two for me to glom onto. But for the first time in my video gaming life, there are so many cool-ass women of color that I’m spoiled for choice.

Fans are still debating whether or not Fortune’s Weave is a prequel or a sequel to Three Houses, and Seteth’s presence doesn’t really nail that down (if you know, you know). But I’m excited to hear what he has to say, and what clues he can reveal about when we are in the Fire Emblem timeline. And maybe if Jester somehow rubs me the wrong way, Seteth might replace him.
