When Dragon Quest X was first released in 2012, it was a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. It still is! But now in 2021, an offline version has been announced. It’s called, wait for it, Dragon Quest X: Offline.

Square Enix has tweaked the visuals and created a stand-alone, offline title.

The teaser trailer promised a way to enjoy a Dragon Quest X adventure in a new way.

DQ creator Yuji Horii explained that, of course, the map is more compact compared to the expansive online world, but this version seems to be perfect for those who don’t play MMORPGs but who love Dragon Quest. Horii also would like those who enjoyed the online version to play the offline one.

As of writing, Square Enix is aiming to have Dragon Quest X: Offline out in Japan as early as next year. No word yet on an international release.

Originally from Texas, Ashcraft has called Osaka home since 2001. He has authored six books, including most recently, The Japanese Sake Bible.

DISCUSSION

Outrider

It’s kinda wild to think that they announced 3 different traditional Dragon Quest games and each has a wildly different graphical style (assuming Dragon Quest XII isn’t gonna look like this or the HD 2D-style DQIII remake, which I think is a safe assumption).

ALSO: I can’t look at the style of this game and not think of DQIX, which I keep hoping they’ll port/remake for a modern platform. It was a fun game but it’s a bummer that it’s out of print and only available on the original DS.
