As it's been reported elsewhere, six students at Cornell University have committed suicide in the past six months. (Read more here.)
Whether it's the overcast skies or the intense course work, Cornell has long been known as the suicide capital of the Ivy League. When I was a student there in the late 1990s, there were a rash of student suicides. Grim, horrible stuff.
There's been speculation as to whether the gorges that surround much of the campus invite suicide.
As a temporary solution, Cornell has erected suicide barriers — dreadful looking suicide barriers that serve as a reminder of those who took the plunge into the gorges down below. The bridges also have temporary security guards. That seems like a superficial solution at best.
Here's hoping the next six months are better.
