This past week saw the release in Japan of Earthbound(Mother 2) on the Wii U’s virtual console.
To celebrate, Nintendo released a special episode of Retro Game Master (GameCenter CX) and even did a three-and-a-half hour playthrough of the game with Itoi, the game’s writer and director. The one other big thing they did was add Mother 2 to the MiiVerse.
Trawling through the Mother 2 MiiVerse has proven more than a little interesting. Besides the run-of-the-mill comments and the tons of English-speaking fans demanding an international release is something amazing—scores of Earthbound fan art drawn via the Wii U controller. This fan art comes in all kinds of different styles and features all your favorite Earthbound characters—including, of course, Ness and the ever popular Mr. Saturn.

Mother 2 (Earthbound) was released on the Japanese Wii U virtual console on March 20, 2013. There is currently no word on an international virtual console release. Earthbound was originally released on the SNES in 1994 in Japan and the United States in 1995.
