Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars was the first role-playing game I ever played, and it took me years to beat it when I was a kid. Then this guy did it in under three hours.
This week's Awesome Games Done Quick 2015 charity speedrunning marathon has featured some really cool runs, including gamers trying to "finish" Animal Crossing, destroying Vanquish one-handed and more. But nothing has impressed me so much as watching speedrunner Checkers beat Super Mario RPG in less time than it took seven-year-old me to figure out how to leave Mario's house. I'm not kidding.
He spends his time mainly fighting bosses and collecting experience in as many non-combat ways as possible to save time. He slips up right at the beginning by running into one of the very first enemies—hilariously, during a spot in the game where you don't actually earn any experience anyway—but it seems things turned out pretty well in the end.
This isn't the first time the game has been played this way, but it is the first time I've seen it. I'm definitely going to watch the entire run when I have time, and then I'll probably wind up picking the game up yet again. Who needs Destiny anyway?
