Almost unbelievably, StarCraft really is back. After extensive teasing, Blizzard revealed today that it is in fact making and planning to release a brand new StarCraft open world shooter. It’s just entitled StarCraft, and I’m so sorry to say you won’t be able to play it until…2030.
We didn’t get any gameplay looks or big details at today’s reveal, but we did see a cinematic showing recruits training for war against the Swarm against a motivational military speech, before suiting up and dropping into a combat zone overwhelmed with enemies. Holt, the character the cinematic is following, finds his weapon jammed in combat before it cuts to an image of Holt’s ruined suit and guts pouring out of it, implying he died in the battle.
And thaaaaat’s basically all we know about StarCraft. The last StarCraft game, StarCraft: Remastered, came out waaaay back in 2017, almost a decade ago. Prior to that, the actual last brand new StarCraft game was StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty, and that came out in the ancient year of 2010.
A StarCraft shooter has been rumored for years now, going back to the canceled Ares project in 2019 and more recently as likely this same open-world shooter suggested in a job listing in 2024 led by former Ubisoft developer and Far Cry 5 director Dan Hay.
