Overwatch is about to get its first post-launch map. It’s a castle village in Germany with a distinctly medieval vibe, and it’s called Eichenwalde.
Blizzard revealed the map at Gamescom in—wait for it—Germany. Pretty cheeky, Blizz. Here’s a video:
It’s an Assault/Escort hybrid map, and it’s got an Omnic Crisis (read: robot apocalypse) related story attached:
“The site of one of the most famous battles during the Omnic Crisis, it was here that the leader of the Crusaders, Balderich von Alder, and a handful of his best soldiers made a last stand against an advancing automaton army. Outnumbered and outgunned, they were ultimately slain during the resulting combat. However, thanks to their valiant efforts, the German military was able to push back the omnic offensive and win the fight.”
The attacking team’s goal is to reclaim Balderich’s remains, a map objective that becomes especially morbid if you consider the prospect of repeating it hundreds of times. Why do heroes want his body? Maybe his extremely Reinhardt-esque armor contains lost technology. Or maybe, continuing in grand Overwatch tradition, he just has a great ass.
Eichenwalde is coming to Overwatch “soon.”
