There’s a constant back and forth within the gaming community about what constitutes a Soulslike, and it’s dominating the conversation surrounding Black Myth: Wukong in too many circles. It’s an excellent action game with Soulslike mechanics, an enthralling story to tell, unique characters, and rewarding yet challenging boss fights. As expected, reviews for Wukong run the gamut. There are genuine reactions from people who finished the main story within a day or two of release, calls to reject modernity and embrace monke, artwork that we probably can’t share, and more than a few complaints about difficulty spikes. It’s sometimes challenging to get a clear consensus on a game due to the number of joke reviews posted on Steam, but Valve’s recent crackdown means we can now gain better insight.
