BioWare Taps HeroEngine For Old Republic MMO

Simutronics and BioWare announce today that the eagerly-awaited MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic era is being built using Simutronics' HeroEngine design platform.

The HeroEngine is an MMO development platform that allows for teams in different locations geographically to build the world while online playing the game on a server, with changes and updates occurring instantaneously. This eliminates the need for compiling new builds on a regular basis, which in turn greatly reduces development time.

Simutronics is the developer behind Gemstone IV, the longest running commercial MUD in the world, as well as the Interactive Fiction Engine, which is essentially does for text-based MMOs what the HeroEngine does for graphical ones. These guys know their online multiplayer, and their tools should be a great help in getting Star Wars: The Old Republic up and running.

Collaborative Tool Significantly Aids Game Development

GAITHERSBURG, Md. - Dec. 10, 2008

Updates and changes to the game environment are instantaneous, negating the need for nightly builds and code crunching, which significantly reduces the notoriously long MMOG development cycle.
