Walking through a well-designed landscape can be the best part of some video games. Great gameworlds can amplify the dread, excitement or sadness you're meant to feel while playing. Some of the very best have been collected in a student-made book that's just as pretty.

Created by a trio of German design students, New Eden rounds up game environments from The Last of Us, Hotline Miami and Journey, among others. It's filled with great touches, like a table of contents that looks like a video game overworld map and icons that tell readers what kind of genre each game belongs to.

But it's that cover—a laser-engraved slab of wood—that really puts the work of Christian Ernst, Robin Soyka and Alexander Venus over the top. Really makes you want to hold it in your hands.
